Head's Up

Ron Roukema

Dr. Ronald (Ron) Roukema is the Interim Head of School of Hong Kong International School. Ron received his BA in History Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on a full scholarship through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. He earned his MA in School Administration from East Carolina University in North Carolina and was awarded an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from North Carolina State University with a concentration in curriculum and instruction.

Since joining HKIS in 2014, Dr. Ron Roukema has served as Upper Primary Principal, Provost, and, since 2017, Interim Head of School.

Prior to joining HKIS, Ron served as the Head of School for Marymount International School in Paris, France. Marymount is a private, Catholic, international school offering an American-based curriculum to students from pre-kindergarten through Middle School. Some of Ron's achievements in this position have been leading the development of a new strategic plan, creating a balanced literacy program for K-5 reading and writing, and implementing a new appraisal process for faculty which allowed faculty to pursue both professional and personal goals.

Prior to Marymount, Ron served as a Principal at Shanghai American School's Pudong campus where he was responsible for staffing, curriculum, budgeting, and the day to day operations of the school. Ron was also a Principal in various public schools in Durham, North Carolina for seven years. During that same period, he served as an adjunct professor for Campbell University and a Principal Mentor for Masters of School Administration students at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Ron and his wife, Ashley, have three children who are HKIS students.

The inside track from a current parent

We embrace all pupils, find out what makes them light-up, we instil confidence by providing opportunities for them to truly flourish as themselves. Childhood dreams take flight, ‘I wish’ becomes ‘I do’, and HKIS pupils step forward into their chosen universities as confident individuals with character.

As parents we love...

  • Wonderful opportunities for children of all abilities in a wide range of sporting and creative pursuits
  • Inspiring teachers who encourage children to think and challenge conventional thinking
  • US curriculum that gives an inside track to preparing students for US boarding schools and universities

As pupils we love...

  • The amazing facilities: an extensive library, a gym with stage and band room, video broadcast studio, Chinese studies center, art and music rooms, and of course, the playgrounds
  • The Interim program which runs through the 4 years of highschool - not only is this a week long off-campus chance to be more independent but it is packed with experiential courses that really help to foster a love of learning
  • Undertaking projects that allow us to realize we can make a difference to the local and global community. There is nothing more empowering to feel you can make a positive and lasting contribution

What makes us different

HKIS is Hong Kong's leading international through-school, a welcoming community of over 2,800 students and 500 faculty and staff. We are grounded in the Christian faith, and respect the spiritual lives of all in our community.

We know that students learn best when they are in charge of how they learn. Our American-style program permits students to do this, with our expert teachers guiding their learning to achieve excellence. Our campuses provide space for extensive athletics and well-being programs.

Our students come from over 40 countries around the world, and integrate well into school life at HKIS no matter which school system they have come from. HKIS graduates attend excellent universities in the US, the UK, Canada, and across Europe and Asia.
