Head's Up

Sean Lynch

The proud father of a CIS alumna and a CIS student (in the Classes of 2021 and 2023), Sean Lynch has been Head of School at Chinese International School since August 2018, after serving for seven years as headmaster in New York City and for 15 years as an educational leader in Paris, always in the field of innovative bilingual education. For two years, he also worked as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School, and, for 14 years, Sean was a Lecturer at Sciences Po Paris. Holding French, Irish and American nationalities, educated in Austria, England, France and the United States, and speaking several languages, Sean received his undergraduate degree from Yale, including a year as a Visiting Scholar at Oxford. In addition, he has earned advanced degrees from Sciences Po Paris, as well as executive certification from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Stanford Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, and INSEAD. Sean is a Klingenstein Fellow of Columbia University Teachers College and a recipient of the Palmes Académiques from the French government for contributions to the advancement of French culture around the world. His favourite pastimes: hiking and trail-running across Hong Kong’s peaks; dragon boat paddling in the South China Sea; trying to memorise the poetry of 李白; and harnessing the educational promise of our emerging metaverse!

The inside track from a current parent

The reason I chose CIS for my children was because the school strives for balance among the disciplines and for balance between classroom and non-classroom learning. They genuinely try to encourage to enquire and to think critically and creatively. I also appreciated the bilingual emphasis of the primary program given that equal time is devoted to the two languages of English and Chinese (Mandarin) and much of the school-developed curriculum is delivered in both languages.

As parents we love...

  • Strong academic performance of students
  • Rich bilingual environment that offers opportunities such as a two-week China Experience Programme (Years 7-9) and the year-long CIS Hangzhou programme (Year 10)
  • The focus of the school in fostering students to be active, open-minded, independent learners.

As pupils we love...

  • The wide-variety of programmes on offer at the school including Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), a private music lesson programme, and competitive sports teams. CCAs cover the following categories: Arts, Music, Sports, Academic & Enrichment, Communication & Language, as well as Global Issues, Community, Environment, and Service. There is something for everyone!
  • The extent to which Mandarin is so integrated into daily classes that it creates an immersive learning environment that is so readily adopted
